Updated 16 October 2026
This notice covers the Hegemon website, free reader accounts and Hegemon email subscriptions. Helsinki Geoeconomics School Ab is the controller responsible for this processing. For privacy questions, contact secretariat@geoeconomics.fi.
Information we use
When you subscribe, we use your email address, any name you provide, your reader identifier, signup information and newsletter preferences to manage your subscription. Your email address is needed to confirm signup, send sign-in links and deliver the newsletters you request. You can read public articles without subscribing.
We send newsletters with your consent. You can withdraw consent through the preference link in our emails, your reader account or by contacting us. This does not affect the lawfulness of earlier processing.
We use account and technical information to operate the reader service, answer enquiries and protect the website against misuse. Our basis is our legitimate interest in providing a reliable, secure publication service. If you email us, we use your contact details and message to handle your enquiry.
Analytics and cookies
Website analytics, member-source tracking, outbound link tagging, email-open tracking and email-click tracking are turned off for the free launch. Information collected before these changes has not automatically been deleted.
Reader sign-in uses cookies needed for account access. The site also loads external software and fonts. In particular, Stripe components may use cookies and technical identifiers for security and fraud prevention even though no payment card is required for a free subscription. We do not describe this website as cookie-free.
Service providers
Ghost Foundation Ltd provides our hosted publication, reader-account and newsletter services, using its hosting and email-delivery providers. Authorised publication and support personnel can access reader information for their work. Microsoft 365 handles enquiries sent to our organisational email addresses. Websupport hosts the retained WordPress system while its records and recovery copy are preserved during migration. Websupport also forwards visitors from geoeconomics.fi to www.geoeconomics.fi and receives the connection information needed to handle those requests.
The website loads fonts from Bunny Fonts, operated by BunnyWay d.o.o., and software components through jsDelivr, operated by Volentio JSD Limited. It also loads Stripe browser components. External requests transmit connection information such as your IP address, browser information and the requested resource.
Cookiebot by Usercentrics provides our cookie-consent dialog and records your choices. Our current setting remembers a choice for 12 months unless you change it sooner. Use Cookie settings in the footer to review or change your choices, or withdraw optional cookie consent. Details of this service are available in Cookiebot’s Privacy Policy.
Bunny Fonts states that its font service does not track users or keep end-user logs. jsDelivr describes technical usage records and their retention. Stripe explains its processing in its Privacy Policy and Cookie Policy.
International processing
Our providers may process information outside the European Economic Area. Ghost's data-processing terms cover processing inside and outside the EU and safeguards for relevant transfers, including standard contractual clauses. Contact us to request information about the safeguards applicable to your data.
How long we keep information
Reader-account and preference information is kept while your account is maintained. Unsubscribing stops the selected newsletters; it does not itself delete your account. You can ask us to delete it. A limited record of an opt-out may remain for as long as needed to prevent unwanted mail from the relevant mailing list.
Enquiries are kept for handling the matter and necessary follow-up. We retain records required by law or needed for a specific unresolved dispute for the relevant obligation or claim period, rather than keeping all correspondence indefinitely.
Historical subscriber lists, migration exports and recovery copies are retained to reconcile the move and recover the service. They are not a new mailing list or permission to send additional newsletters. Their continuing need must be reviewed when migration and recovery work is complete.
Technical logs and provider backups have different retention arrangements from live reader accounts. Their retention depends on service operation, security investigations, backup recovery and applicable legal obligations. Our providers do not publish a single fixed deletion period covering all these records. Deleting a live account does not necessarily remove every backup copy immediately. Contact us about deletion of your data, including retained copies.
Your choices and rights
You may request access, correction, deletion, restriction or a portable copy of your personal data where the relevant right applies. You may object to processing based on legitimate interests and withdraw newsletter consent at any time.
Send requests to secretariat@geoeconomics.fi. You can also complain to Finland's Office of the Data Protection Ombudsman or another competent data-protection authority.
Other Helsinki Geoeconomics services
Event applications, Society membership and event payments are separate from a free Hegemon reader account. Contact secretariat@geoeconomics.fi for information about personal data used in those services.
