Helsinki Geoeconomics Society invites applications for the Karl & Michael Polanyi Emerging Geoeconomists Cohort 2027: an international programme for people exploring how economics and power shape our world.
The cohort runs during 2027, combining online exchange and peer discussion with opportunities to contribute to the Society’s wider intellectual work. Participation is primarily online, with selected in-person opportunities optional.
Apply by 4 December 2026, 23:59 Helsinki time (EET). There is no fee to apply.
Exchange and contribution
The cohort brings together emerging researchers and practitioners across disciplines, sectors and countries. Its name honours Karl and Michael Polanyi, whose work connects markets and institutions with knowledge, professional judgment and intellectual community.
Alongside dedicated cohort sessions and informal online salons, participants can contribute to:
- Hegemon reporting, interviews, features, article and book reviews, print production and website publishing;
- The Geo-Economist podcast;
- New Helsinki Process research and Task Force work;
- international convenings; and
- Society governance committees.
Members rotate through selected areas and may express preferences for roles matching their interests, skills and experience. Placements depend on organisational needs and are not guaranteed.
Who can apply
We welcome advanced undergraduates, graduate students, PhD candidates and early-career professionals from different professional, disciplinary and geographic backgrounds. Equivalent professional experience will also be considered. Applicants do not need already to describe themselves as geoeconomists.
Participants should have strong English writing skills and be able to engage consistently throughout the programme.
How to apply
Prepare a CV in PDF format and a 700–1,000-word application statement explaining:
- Why HGS: what draws you to geoeconomics and the Karl & Michael Polanyi Cohort;
- What you bring: the perspectives, experience and expertise you would contribute; and
- How you think: an example of work or a question reflecting your intellectual interests and approach.
Submit your application through the online application form by 4 December 2026 at 23:59 Helsinki time (EET). Shortlisted applicants will be asked to complete a brief written exercise and may be invited to an online interview.
